Microsoft Student Select Licenses FAQ

What is a license?
You can purchase software in one of two ways. You can buy a full product (or boxed product) that usually comes with media and manuals. In some cases you can also buy a license - a "right to use" the software.

Who is allowed to purchase a Student Select License?
In order to purchase a license you must be a full or part-time McGill student. You must have been issued a McGill student ID card as proof of your student status.

Is this a complete version of the software?
Yes. The software itself is identical to the full retail package. What it does not include is the retail packaging (the box and installation instructions) and free Microsoft after-sales telephone support.

Does the license come with media?
Yes. The program offering price from the MCS includes the costs for the media. The media (CDs) for these products contain the unique product authorization key necessary to install the software. For that reason every license must be sold with a copy of the media.

Can I install the software on more than one computer?
No. You are allowed to install and use only one copy of the software license you have purchased.

Can I buy a second license for another computer?
No. You can purchase only one Student Select License per version of a software product.

Can I continue to use the software when I leave McGill?
You own the software in perpetuity. You can continue to use it even when you leave McGill.

Can I upgrade my licensed software?
Yes. While you are a student at McGill you are allowed to purchase a copy of any new versions of offered products as soon as they are made available to program participants. If you are no longer a registered student you may upgrade your software under the same terms and conditions as any other retail user.

What is required of me when I purchase a Microsoft Student Select License?
You must present a valid McGill student ID card before the transaction can take place. In order to maintain complete records, we will also ask you for your name, address and telephone number. You will be given a Microsoft Student Select License Agreement as well as a copy of Microsoft Product Use Rights to read and sign.

What will I receive when I purchase my license?
The McGill Computer Store administers all Student Select Licenses and retains original licenses and records for each customer. When you purchase your license, you will receive the following: " A copy of your MCS invoice indicating your product information " Terms and conditions for your license "

A copy of the media Can I return or exchange licenses?
Licences and corresponding media may be returned within 90 days of the time of purchase. Note that only the license cost will be reimbursed. Media can be returned for exchange only if it is defective. At no time will media costs be reimbursed.
